Bridge BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP on a single WBox. The gateway acts as a BACnet router between an Ethernet BACnet/IP backbone and an RS-485 MS/TP trunk, so the BMS reaches every field controller without a separate router box.

The two networks

BACnet/IP

BACnet/IP carries BACnet over Ethernet/UDP (port 47808) — the backbone that BMS head-ends and modern controllers speak.

BACnet MS/TP

BACnet MS/TP carries BACnet over an RS-485 twisted-pair bus — the low-cost field level used by VAV boxes, fan-coil units and field controllers.

Typical use case

A BMS supervises on BACnet/IP, but the terminal units (VAV, FCU, thermostats) sit on one or more MS/TP trunks. Instead of a stand-alone BACnet router per trunk, the WBox routes the two networks: MS/TP devices become visible on the IP side with their objects and properties, and the head-end reads and writes them as if they were native IP devices.

How the WBox bridges BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP

Enable the BACnet driver in both BACnet/IP and MS/TP roles on the same WBox. Give each network its own BACnet network number; the WBox forwards APDUs and Who-Is/I-Am between them, so device discovery works across the router. Set the MS/TP MAC address, baud rate (38400 or 76800) and max-master to match the trunk. The same gateway can simultaneously bridge other protocols if the project needs it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WBox a true BACnet router?

Yes. It forwards BACnet traffic between the BACnet/IP network and the MS/TP network, each with its own network number, including Who-Is/I-Am, so the BMS discovers MS/TP devices through it.

How many MS/TP devices and trunks are supported?

An MS/TP segment carries up to 31 masters per RS-485 trunk by specification; baud rate and max-master are configurable to match the field devices, and the larger WBox models can serve more than one trunk.

Can it map objects, not just route?

Yes. Beyond pure routing, the WBox can expose selected MS/TP objects on the IP side (and vice-versa) and apply scaling or logic — useful when you want to curate or transform points rather than route everything.

Do I still need a separate BACnet router?

No. The BACnet/IP and MS/TP sides run on one WBox; there is no separate router box and no Windows gateway PC to maintain.

What you need

One WBox gateway with the BACnet driver licence handles both the IP and the MS/TP side:
